ABOUT MELINDA
Artist’s Statement
I have always been fascinated by the
textures, patterns, and colors of fabric. While I have sewn
all my life, it wasn’t until I began quilting that I
was able to use fabric to express myself in the way I wanted.
Using types and weights of fabric other than cotton opened
up new worlds for me. Exploring using various threads, beads
and other surface design elements has been tremendous fun.
The richness of our world-wide textile
heritage never fails to amaze me. I find great inspiration
for my quilt designs through my studies of textiles and ornamentation
from other countries. Their use of many different patterns
together to make a unified whole is intriguing.
Lately, because of my study of modern
art and design, I have begun working in a more abstract manner.
My most recent work has been focused on a study of geometric
shapes and using different shapes and colors as a means to
bring complex layers and depth into my work.
