ABOUT MELINDA
Artist’s Statement
The places in the US that I love the most (New Mexico,
New Orleans, DC area) all have several different cultures
co-existing, lending enrichment and excitement to those
communities. Each culture has distinct customs, music, art,
and textiles, but come together to form a community.
I am intrigued by the interactions that occur between
cultures, each borrowing from the other those customs or design
elements that integrate well with their own.
My most recent work explores that interaction by combining
a wide variety of types, textures and patterns of fabrics along
with surface design techniques (thread, beads, stamping, etc.)
in separate works that are joined together into a unified work.
